William James, one of the great psychologists of Harvard, had already in the early 1900s noticed the great "psychological sophistication" of Buddhism. Indeed, as reported by Epstein (2), James, while lecturing at Harvard, "suddenly stopped when he recognized a visiting Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka in his audience, Take my chair .. . You are better equipped to lecture on psychology than I . This is the psychology that everybody will be studying twenty-five years from now.'"   (Max Michalon M.D.-  Associate Professor, Department   of Psychiatry, Dalhousie University )

  1. Could it be Angarika Dharmapala? He travelled in the North Americas and the world with the Theosophical Society that Henry Olcott formed. Anagarika Dharmapala also stopped in Hawaii during one of his trips on the invitation of a philanthopic lady (Mary Foster) and planted a Bo sapling from Sri Maha Bodhi

  4. Dr. Jayatunge,
There is a reference to this story slightly different from the above. It was Anagarika Dharmapala (who was known much later as Ven. Devamitta dharmapala). He was in Chicago in 1893 for World Parliament of Religions and visited (invited?) by Prof.James to speak to his class. I read it in HOW THE SWANS CAME TO THE LAKE by Rick Fields. It was not Venerable. Walpola Rahula. Ven.Rahula was born in 1907. World Parliament of Religions took place in 1893.

I don't miss a new article on your blog. I like your style of writing too. I just bumped on to this article while I was in search of your article on Ragging in Universities and you mentioned that kind of cruelty is justified by the victims who suffer from the Stockholm Syndrome.
Hope you wouldn't get tired of blog writing and publishing. Wish you the best.
