The Final Pages of Jonathan Harker’s Diary ( Part 6)

by Dr Ruwan M Jayatunge

16th May

Our journey to seek medical advice for Mina led us to consult with Dr. William Macewen in Glasgow. Throughout this process, Dom Boniface maintained a neutral stance, refraining from any direct intervention. He expressed a belief that physicians might not fully grasp the underlying causes of her condition, yet he acknowledged the value of obtaining a second opinion, suggesting that there was no detriment in doing so. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that Mina remained receptive to divine mercy during this challenging time. I found myself in agreement with Dom Boniface's perspective, which ultimately encouraged me to proceed with the visit to Glasgow alongside Mina, hoping for insights that could aid in her recovery.

Dr. William Macewen conducted a thorough examination of Mina, taking into account the detailed account I provided regarding her behaviour pattern over the last six months. He posed numerous inquiries concerning her episodes of as sleepwalking, as well as the behavioral alterations she experiences during the night. Dr. Macewen articulated that Mina appears to be undergoing a series of emotional and hallucinatory episodes characterized by intense feelings of terror, ecstasy, and confrontations with unseen entities. He described her condition as a "double consciousness," suggesting that she may be experiencing a form of Neuromimesis, which bears resemblance to "hystero-epilepsy," indicating a neurotic or hysterical simulation of symptoms.

Furthermore, he noted that during these episodes, Mina enters a state of Hysterical Aura, marked by sudden rigidity of her entire body and limbs, which seemingly endows her with extraordinary physical strength. This state is accompanied by extreme and acrobatic physical contortions that historically have been associated with demonic possession, leading to episodes of Hallucinatory Delirium. Additionally, Mina experiences Transient Amnesia, rendering her unable to recall the events of the previous night, a phenomenon that he attributes to her underlying neurasthenia, which is contributing to her sleepwalking and the complexities of her double consciousness.

Dr. William Macewen recommended that Mina remain hospitalized as an inpatient, necessitating constant observation and security provided by the medical staff. Faced with no alternative, I agreed to this course of action, leading to her admission at The Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where she was assigned to the female medical wards. Throughout her stay, Mina was subjected to rigorous, round-the-clock monitoring by the hospital personnel, ensuring her safety and well-being. Additionally, dedicated night attendants were tasked with patrolling the female wards continuously, which allowed me to arrange for a hospital attendant to remain close to Mina during the night hours. To facilitate this extra layer of care, I made an additional payment, underscoring my commitment to her safety and comfort during this challenging time.

Mina received treatment that included Potassium Bromide along with various other bromide salts, which were administered to manage her condition. During the nighttime, Chloral Hydrate was utilized to assist her when she entered a state of somnambulism. On occasion, she was also subjected to inhalations of Amyl Nitrite or Chloroform, which were likely intended to alleviate her symptoms or provide some form of relief. Her stay in the hospital extended for more than six months, during which time Dom Boniface made periodic visits to offer her spiritual blessings, perhaps as a means of providing comfort and support during her challenging ordeal. Meanwhile, I resided at the home of James Murray, which allowed me to spend time with Quincy, thereby maintaining a connection with those who were important to me during this difficult period.

Mina underwent an extensive treatment regimen lasting over eight months at the hospital, where she was under the care of Dr. William Macewen. Upon her discharge, we brought her back home, where James and his wife provided attentive and compassionate care. Throughout her hospitalization, Mina was subjected to a significant amount of medication, which resulted in her exhibiting lethargic behavior during her waking hours. However, following Dr. Macewen's intervention, a notable improvement was observed; her sleepwalking episodes ceased entirely, allowing her to enjoy uninterrupted sleep at night. To facilitate this positive change, Dr. Macewen prescribed a nighttime sedative, and I diligently administered these medications to her each evening before she retired for the night, ensuring that she received the necessary support for a restful slumber.

In the subsequent stage of her treatment, Dr. William Macewen advised that Mina be admitted to Ticehurst House Sanatorium, located in the picturesque region of Sussex. This renowned facility is distinguished for its luxurious accommodations, catering primarily to the English aristocracy and affluent elite, making it one of the most prestigious and costly private institutions of its kind. Following Dr. Macewen's recommendation, which included a formal referral letter, I escorted Mina to Ticehurst House Sanatorium. Upon our arrival, we were assigned a detached private villa, complete with attentive servants and a range of other amenities designed to ensure a comfortable and serene environment conducive to her recovery.

…………………..At the Ticehurst House Sanatorium, Mina received care from Dr. Herbert Francis Hayes Newington and his dedicated team, who employed   "moral therapy" aimed at addressing her psychological distress. The doctors said this mode of therapy would help her frayed nerves and alleviate symptoms of hysteria, melancholia, and internal "morbid delusions." To facilitate her recovery, Mina was engaged in a variety of gentle activities that included needlework, embroidery, watercolor painting, and playing the piano in the elegant grand drawing rooms of the sanatorium. Additionally, she participated in social events alongside other patients, which encompassed formal dinner parties, musical concerts, and theatrical performances, all intended to foster a sense of community and normalcy. Her treatment regimen also included daily carriage rides through the picturesque Sussex hills, allowing her to connect with nature and enjoy the serene landscape. As part of her therapeutic regimen, Mina underwent treatments involving alternating hot and cold pressurized water jets, which were believed to invigorate her body. Furthermore, weak electrical currents were strategically applied to specific muscle groups, aimed at restoring the body's diminished electrical "tone," thereby enhancing her overall physical and mental well-being.

Mina dedicated almost a year to her treatment at the Ticehurst House Sanatorium, during which I had the privilege of accompanying her and observing her journey toward recovery. Throughout this time, we experienced a notable absence of distressing incidents, allowing us to find a sense of tranquility and stability. Mina's episodes of somnambulism and her nighttime restlessness gradually diminished, leading to a marked improvement in her overall demeanor as she became increasingly serene. However, it is important to note that the medication prescribed to her often left her in a state of drowsiness, resulting in her spending a significant portion of her days in a sedated condition, which, while beneficial for her calmness, also raised concerns about her overall alertness and engagement with her surroundings.

After nearly a year of residing at Ticehurst House Sanatorium, we returned to James Murray's residence in Glasgow, where we enjoyed a stay of almost three months. This period was filled with joy, primarily because it allowed us to reconnect with our son, Quincy. Mina took an active role in engaging with him, and it was heartwarming to witness the happiness that blossomed between them after such a long separation. Additionally, I realized that I had not visited London in several years, and it became imperative for me to travel there to inspect my mansion and other properties. I am profoundly grateful to Sir Edward Carson, who diligently managed my assets and financial affairs during my absence, ensuring that everything remained in order while I focused on my recovery.

…………………………. After many years away, Mina and I have returned to London, a city that has undergone significant transformation during our absence. Thanks to the diligent efforts of Sir Edward Carson, our mansion has been well-maintained, and the staff has ensured that it remains in impeccable condition. However, as we navigate the streets of London, it is evident that both the city and we ourselves have changed; the passage of time has left us feeling somewhat estranged, as many of our friends have passed away, rendering the once-familiar surroundings almost foreign to me.

Throughout this period, I have kept in touch with Dom Boniface, providing him with updates on Mina's health, which has improved considerably, much to his relief. Despite our return, I find myself reluctant to resume my career as an attorney; instead, I am inclined towards an early retirement, prioritizing the care of Mina and embracing a more tranquil existence, focusing on the present rather than the uncertainties of the future. Meanwhile, our son Quincy is nearing the completion of his schooling and has developed a keen interest in Banking and Finance, aspiring to become a stockbroker, which adds a new layer of hope and ambition to our family’s future.

…………………… Upon our relocation to London, I remained ever vigilant against the ominous presence of Dracula and the malevolent influences he might exert. To safeguard our home, I diligently implemented a series of spiritual measures, which included daily cleansing rituals, the performance of various ceremonies, and the establishment of protective barriers designed to thwart any demonic entities from infiltrating our sanctuary. In my quest for further protection, I sought the expertise of Father Lincoln Stanhope Wainwright, a renowned exorcist, and brought Mina along for a consultation. During our session, he astutely recognized Mina's spiritual vulnerabilities and initiated extensive prayer vigils that spanned several hours. As part of his protective rites, he utilized Holy Oils- Unction, and with great reverence, dipped his thumb into the consecrated oil. He then firmly traced the sign of the cross on Mina's forehead, over her eyes, and on her hands, a powerful gesture intended to symbolically seal the entry points of her mind and body against any encroaching dark forces.

I have observed that Mina occasionally exhibits intense and visceral physical reactions when in proximity to sacred objects, a phenomenon that Father Lincoln Stanhope Wainwright has identified as Hierognosis. For instance, during our visit to St. Benedict’s Abbey, she forcefully threw the crucifix when I attempted to place it around her neck. Father Lincoln Stanhope elaborated on this reaction, explaining that it signifies a deep and involuntary spiritual struggle within her. He emphasized that the sacraments possess a genuine spiritual potency, which can be overwhelming for corrupted spirits, rendering them unable to endure the sanctity associated with these holy items.

I find myself increasingly concerned about Mina's health and overall well-being, prompting me to remain vigilant in my observations of her. Recently, she has reported experiencing unusual sensations known as "phantom tastes," where, during her consumption of typical London cuisine, she unexpectedly perceives flavors reminiscent of copper or ash. This phenomenon raises questions regarding potential changes in her palate or underlying health issues.  On a more positive note, I am relieved to note that her episodes of sleepwalking have significantly decreased, which alleviates some of my worries. Additionally, I am thankful for the support of Father Lincoln Stanhope Wainwright, who is currently conducting spiritual cleansing rituals for her, as I believe this may contribute positively to her mental and emotional state.

……………………. For nearly a year, Mina has been undergoing a process of spiritual cleansing under the guidance of Father Lincoln Stanhope Wainwright, and while she has shown some signs of improvement, there are still troubling developments.

Today, as I gently brushed her hair, I observed that the hair follicles near the scar on her forehead appeared increasingly brittle, raising concerns about her overall well-being. Additionally, I noticed an unsettling phenomenon: her shadow, cast by the flickering candlelight, did not seem to align with her physical movements, suggesting a disconnection between her essence and her corporeal form. This disquieting observation is compounded by a previous incident involving Dr. Van Helsing, who attempted to bless her by placing a piece of the Sacred Wafer upon her head. Unfortunately, due to the lingering spiritual taint from her having ingested Dracula's blood, the holy object reacted violently, scorching her skin and leaving a vivid red scar that resembled a brand seared into her flesh with the intensity of white-hot metal. However, following the destruction of Dracula, a remarkable transformation occurred; the red mark vanished entirely, restoring her forehead to a state of clarity and purity, yet the lingering effects of her ordeal continue to cast a shadow over her recovery.

I promptly communicated my concerns to Father Lincoln Stanhope Wainwright, who expressed significant apprehension regarding the situation. Mina has been experiencing profound fatigue throughout the day, often succumbing to a deep, almost death-like slumber from which she cannot awaken until dusk. During these episodes, her complexion has taken on an alarming pallor, and her skin feels unnaturally cold to the touch. This sudden and troubling change in Mina's condition has raised serious alarms in my mind, leading me to ponder whether she might be under the sinister influence of Dracula. The implications of such a possibility are deeply unsettling, and I find myself increasingly anxious about her well-being and the potential dangers that may lie ahead.

Father Lincoln Stanhope Wainwright strongly recommended that I refrain from keeping Mina at home and instead seek the care of St. Vincent’s Hospital, situated within Sion House in Chiswick, West London. This institution, operated by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, is purposefully designed as a convent-asylum, offering a discreet and tranquil refuge for individuals grappling with spiritual turmoil. Father Wainwright emphasized that this facility would serve as an optimal environment for Mina's safety and her path to recovery.

Upon my arrival with her, I was struck by the serene, monastic atmosphere, characterized by the presence of crucifixes, chapels, and meticulously maintained gardens, all of which contributed to alleviating her distress. After successfully admitting her to the hospital, I took the time to compose a letter to Dom Boniface, detailing Mina's recent condition and the developments that had led to this crucial decision.

I received a letter from Dom Boniface after several weeks had passed.

Dear Mr. Harker,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Mina's recent relapse and subsequent hospitalization. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are firmly with her during this challenging time. It appears that the malevolent count is attempting to draw her into his dark domain, yet I believe that divine and spiritual forces are actively working to thwart his sinister intentions. Nevertheless, this formidable adversary remains relentless in his pursuit, demonstrating both cunning and patience as he bides his time, waiting for an opportune moment to strike at you and Mina when you are most vulnerable. However, I am convinced that Dracula harbours a deep-seated fear of you. Your previous encounter with him, where you wielded a heavy, curved Kukri knife to inflict a violent wound to his throat, coupled with your ally Quincey Morris plunging a large Bowie knife into his heart, resulted in his body disintegrating into dust. This traumatic memory undoubtedly lingers in his mind, leading him to regard you not as an ordinary target but as a formidable opponent who has bested him before. It is likely this fear that has kept him at bay for so many years, giving you the false impression that he has either vanished or is lying in wait. I urge you to remain vigilant and to keep faith in God and Christ, for this spiritual fortitude is your greatest weapon against such a creature from the depths of hell.

Dom Boniface

Dom Boniface's correspondence prompted a profound reflection on my past encounters with Dracula, revealing the Count's perception of me as more than just a mere victim; he regards me as a significant adversary who once posed a threat to his existence. I vividly recall the harrowing moment when I discovered Dracula in a state of repose within his coffin, nestled in the shadowy depths of the castle crypt. An overwhelming urge surged within me, a "terrible desire" to eradicate the creature that had wrought so much havoc upon the world. In a moment of reckless courage, I seized a nearby workman’s shovel and aimed a strike at Dracula’s face. However, as I brought the shovel down, his eyes snapped open, ensnaring me in a paralyzing, hypnotic gaze that compelled me to release my grip on the weapon. The blow, instead of delivering a fatal strike, merely grazed his visage, leaving a deep gash above his forehead. This wound, stark against his pallid skin, did not bleed the crimson of human blood; instead, it gaped open, a testament to his unnatural, undead essence.

Shortly after this encounter, Dracula's Romani servants entered the crypt to entomb him within his earth-box, preparing for his transport to England. In a cruel twist of fate, while Dracula was incapacitated by the paralysis of daylight, he locked the castle doors behind him, deliberately leaving me ensnared within, destined to be hunted and preyed upon by his three vampiric brides. Yet, against all odds, I managed to escape.

The scar I inflicted upon Dracula became a lasting emblem of his vulnerability, a physical reminder that he was not the invincible being he believed himself to be. This mark remained with him until the day we ultimately vanquished him, serving as a constant reminder of the power I wielded in that fateful encounter.

Dracula sought retribution for my act of defiance and subsequent escape, and in a calculated move, he chose to focus his malevolent intentions on Mina. His sinister objective was to compel me to witness the gradual transformation of my cherished wife into a grotesque, bloodthirsty creature, thereby shattering my mental stability and obliterating any semblance of happiness I might possess as a form of punishment for my previous assault with the shovel. This relentless pursuit of vengeance, while initially appearing to be a demonstration of his formidable power, ultimately reveals itself as his critical weakness, as it blinds him to the potential consequences of his actions and the resilience of the human spirit.

The confrontation that led to his destruction was merely a temporary setback, as he has now returned, driven by an insatiable thirst for vengeance against me. Time has not been kind, and I find myself no longer possessing the vigour of my youth; my strength has waned significantly, leaving me vulnerable. Compounding my plight is the tragic loss of my spiritual allies, who were systematically hunted down and slain by Dracula, each demise a calculated move to isolate me further. His strategy was clear: by eliminating my support system one by one, he aimed to corner me, rendering me defenceless.

………………Mina spent a significant period of eighteen months as an inpatient at St. Vincent’s Hospital, after which she was finally discharged and brought home. Upon her return, I took meticulous precautions to monitor her health and well-being, ensuring that I maintained constant communication with Dom Boniface to seek guidance and support. At times, I find myself reflecting on the situation as a metaphorical tug-of-war, with Dracula representing a dark force attempting to draw Mina into his sinister realm, while we, through unwavering spiritual support and determination, strive to protect and preserve her soul from his grasp. The outcome of this ongoing struggle remains uncertain; should Dracula prevail, Mina would be condemned to become his malevolent bride, resulting in the irrevocable damnation of her soul.

………………………….. As the years have unfolded, our existence has become increasingly confined to the bustling city of London, where I have taken extensive measures to ensure her safety from the Count's malevolent influence. My approach has been multifaceted, incorporating a range of physical, spiritual, and tactical strategies designed to create a formidable barrier against any potential threats. I consistently utilize sacred items to establish a spiritual protective shield around her, employing holy water and strategically placing crushed holy wafers throughout our home to fortify this defense.

Dom Boniface has advised me to remain vigilant for any signs of a telepathic connection developing between Mina and the Count, emphasizing the critical importance of the transitional hours of dawn and sunset, during which I must be particularly alert. This relentless pursuit of her safety has transformed me from a passive, traumatized solicitor into a fiercely driven, vengeful hunter, yet as time progresses, I find myself gradually losing grip on that fierce determination, a realization that weighs heavily on my spirit.

………… Today marks the celebration of my 60th birthday, a significant milestone that prompts reflection on the remarkable journey of my life. I embarked on my professional path as a law clerk, diligently working my way up the ranks through perseverance and dedication. However, my life took an unexpected and dramatic turn when my employer, Peter Hawkins, entrusted me with a peculiar assignment: to travel to Transylvania to finalize the necessary paperwork for Count Dracula's acquisition of real estate in London, which notably included the infamous Carfax Abbey. This assignment led to an astonishing 56 days spent ensnared within the eerie confines of Castle Dracula, an experience that profoundly altered both my physical and spiritual essence. Despite the harrowing circumstances, we ultimately succeeded in vanquishing Dracula; however, a subsequent mishap allowed for his resurrection, adding yet another layer of complexity to my already tumultuous existence. Throughout my life, I have faced numerous challenges, each one a testament to my resilience and will to survive in a world fraught with peril.

3rd February

Last night, I endured a deeply disturbing dream that has remained etched in my thoughts. In this vivid nightmare, Count Dracula entered our bedroom, appearing older than I had ever envisioned, his age accentuated by a menacing, defiant expression. He approached Mina and gently kissed her forehead, provoking a whirlwind of emotions within me—fear, anger, and a profound sense of revulsion. In that moment, I yearned for the kukri knife I had once wielded, imagining how I would have swiftly severed Dracula's throat. However, within the confines of the dream, I found myself completely powerless, paralyzed and unable to move my arms or even turn my head to face the horror before me. The Count's fiery gaze bore into me as he spoke in a voice that was distinctly inhuman, ominously proclaiming that Mina would soon be his. The sheer dread of his words jolted me awake, and I felt an overwhelming sense of relief upon realizing I was alone in the room, with Mina peacefully sleeping beside me. It was a moment of deep gratitude, recognizing that it had all been a mere illusion, a nightmare from which I had emerged unscathed.

During breakfast in the morning, I observed a scar on Mina's forehead, a remnant of the Count's kiss, which left me in a state of confusion and concern. This unsettling discovery prompted me to write a letter to Dom Boniface, as I am deeply troubled by the implications of this mark. It raises the alarming possibility that the Count's curse may still be pursuing my dear Mina, leading me to question whether this scar signifies a form of spiritual pollution or an enduring connection to Dracula himself. The thought that this scar could represent a profound damnation in the eyes of God weighs heavily on my mind, as I fervently wish to shield Mina from any such dire fate. If this mark persists, it suggests that Dracula may still be alive, placing Mina in imminent danger of eternal damnation. I recall that when we vanquished Dracula, Mina was restored to a state of purity akin to freshly fallen snow, and the idea that she could now be tainted again is a source of great distress for me.

10th February

I have observed a noticeable shift in Mina's behaviour recently; she has become increasingly withdrawn and communicates with me less frequently. Just last night, she startled me awake in the early hours, claiming that Lucy had spoken to her. In an effort to reassure her, I took the time to clarify the reality of Lucy's situation, emphasizing that it was impossible for Lucy to communicate with anyone.

I recounted the tragic events surrounding Lucy Westenra's demise, detailing how Dr. Van Helsing had to take drastic measures by cutting her throat and driving a wooden stake through her heart to put an end to her undead existence. I explained that Lucy had transformed into a "Bloofer Lady," a mere shell of her former self, manipulated by dark forces. I further elaborated that the act of decapitating her was essential in breaking the curse that bound her, allowing her tormented soul to finally find peace. I reassured Mina that Lucy’s physical form had been irrevocably destroyed, and thus, there was no possibility of Lucy returning, even if Count Dracula were to be resurrected.

I emphasized that Arthur Holmwood's decisive action in driving the stake through her heart, followed by Dr. Van Helsing and Dr. John Seward's subsequent decapitation and the stuffing of her mouth with garlic, ensured that any lingering evil could not re-enter her body. I aimed to convince Mina that her experience was merely a figment of her imagination, a dream that held no basis in reality, in hopes of alleviating her distress.

13th February

This morning, Mina shared with me that Lucy and Sister Felicia had come to visit her during the night, extending an invitation for a walk. Upon hearing this, I felt a wave of distress wash over me, as it rekindled my concerns regarding Mina's history of sleepwalking. The possibility that her sleepwalking episodes might resurface troubled me deeply. In an attempt to alleviate my worries, I suggested to her that perhaps the visit was merely a figment of her imagination or a dream rather than a genuine occurrence. However, despite my efforts to engage her in conversation, she remained unresponsive, leaving me with a sense of unease about her well-being.

22nd February

Mina has shown a significant rise in her irritability, often directing her frustrations towards the household staff, which has created a tense atmosphere within our home. This erratic behavior has culminated in the departure of the staff members, leaving only Mina and me in the residence, a situation that has become increasingly uncomfortable due to her treatment of those who previously worked for us. Given these developments, I contemplated the option of hiring new staff to help ease the burden of household duties; however, Mina has resolutely rejected this notion, expressing a strong desire for autonomy and the ability to oversee her surroundings without the involvement of outside help.

26th February

The current circumstances within our household have reached a critical juncture, as only Mina and I remain in this large mansion. Our son has relocated to Scotland, where he is fully engaged in his professional endeavors, leaving us to navigate this vast space alone. As the nights draw in, I find myself increasingly consumed by anxiety and deep-seated concerns regarding Mina's well-being. My apprehensions are particularly heightened by her tendency to engage in sleepwalking, a ritual that poses potential risks should she venture outside during the night. In light of these fears, I have made it a priority to remain alert during the late hours, closely monitoring her movements to ensure her safety and mitigate any possible dangers that may arise from her nocturnal wanderings.

3rd March

I drifted into slumber, only to be roused from my sleep by Mina at the stroke of midnight. With a sense of urgency, she informed me that Lucy and Sister Felicia were purportedly wandering through our home. A wave of shock washed over me as I hastily lit a lantern, my heart racing as I strained to discern the sounds emanating from the darkness. The unmistakable sound of footsteps reached my ears, leaving me in a state of confusion; I questioned whether I was experiencing an auditory hallucination or if the noises were merely the result of rats scurrying about. A sense of trepidation gripped me, preventing me from venturing into the living room to investigate further. Instead, I locked our bedroom, instinctively covering my ears in an attempt to block out the unsettling sounds. When dawn finally broke, I mustered the courage to explore the living room, only to discover that there was no evidence of any disturbance, leaving me to ponder the mysterious events of the night.

19th March

Mina has ceased to consume food, and as a result, her strength is diminishing day by day. Despite my earnest pleas for her to eat, she remains resolute in her refusal. In a moment of desperation, I attempted to compel her to have her dinner, but she managed to consume only a small portion before succumbing to nausea and vomiting. In an effort to alleviate her distress, I offered her a glass of brandy, hoping it might provide some comfort. However, in a voice that was eerily different from her usual tone, she suddenly requested the blood of the count. This chilling revelation sent a wave of fear coursing through me, rendering me momentarily paralyzed with shock. In my startled state, I inadvertently dropped the glass of brandy, the contents spilling onto the floor as my mind raced to comprehend the implications of her words.

22nd March

Mina's refusal to eat has persisted, leading to several days of fasting that have severely impacted both her mental and physical well-being. In a state of growing concern and desperation, I made the difficult decision to admit her to The Thomas Home at St Thomas’s Hospital, where she is under the care of Dr. Walter Edmunds. Upon evaluation, the doctor conveyed that her condition is precarious, characterized by significant weakness and frailty. To address her nutritional needs, the medical team has resorted to administering highly concentrated, semi-liquid mixtures designed to provide essential sustenance. At the hospital, she was given finely minced mutton broth, warm milk, egg yolks, and raw starch with a small amount of brandy. To facilitate the delivery of these vital nutrients, a tube is carefully inserted through Mina's nose and guided into her stomach, ensuring that she receives the necessary nourishment during this critical time.

24th March

Mina lies in a state of semi-consciousness on the bed, her frail body barely able to muster the strength to respond to her surroundings. As she mutters in a foreign tongue, I can discern fragments of Romani interspersed within her speech. The arrival of the Catholic sisters, who come to provide her with care, seems to instill a profound sense of fear within her, particularly when they present their crucifix; her reaction is immediate and visceral. She instinctively covers her ears as they begin to pray loudly, as if the sound itself is unbearable.

Today, I was particularly grateful for the visit of Dom Boniface, who travelled a considerable distance to reach the hospital. His presence brought a sense of hope, and he performed a spiritual cleansing ritual for Mina. However, as he recited the Latin incantations, she once again shielded her ears, and when he sprinkled Holy Water upon her, her reaction was one of intense discomfort, as if the water were scalding her skin.

28 March

Today, our son Quincy arrived from Scotland to visit his mother, Mina, but the encounter was far from what we had hoped for. Mina appeared unresponsive, her demeanour marked by a pensive expression and a lack of emotional engagement, which was unsettling to witness. At times, she would mutter phrases in Romani, evoking memories of Count Dracula summoning wolves, a chilling association that left me pondering the origins of this language in her speech. She may have unwittingly absorbed this foreign tongue while in a trance-like state. The tension in her demeanour becomes unmistakable each time a nun steps into the room; she instinctively gestures towards the crucifix worn by the nun, her reaction revealing a profound sense of fear that hints at underlying apprehensions.

This evening, I was taken aback when she suddenly raised her voice, repeatedly chanting, "Vînt, adu-mi un dor de ducǎ!" Dom Boniface later informed me that this Romanian phrase translates to "Wind, bring me a desire to leave!" Her words remain elusive, prompting me to contemplate the deeper significance of her plea and the inner turmoil hidden beneath her seemingly indifferent facade.

29th March

Mina's health deteriorated rapidly, plunging her into a state of critical condition. As she oscillated between moments of awareness and unconsciousness, her once gentle and innocent visage transformed into one that exuded an unsettling, predatory aura. Her eyes, now illuminated by a disturbing and almost otherworldly glow, conveyed a sense of danger, while her voice morphed into a deep, sultry timbre that was both alluring and disconcerting. In this altered state, she was oblivious to the presence of Quincy and myself, lost in a realm where reality seemed to elude her grasp. Despite the diligent efforts of the medical team, who administered medication and provided attentive care, the situation took a tragic turn. By the stroke of midnight, the unthinkable occurred; Mina's heart ceased to beat, marking the end of her life and leaving an indelible void in my heart.

Upon learning of Mina's departure, an initial wave of shock washed over me, swiftly followed by an overwhelming sense of sorrow that enveloped my heart. The realization that she was no longer in my life struck me with such force that it felt as though the very foundation of my existence had crumbled beneath me. The absence of Mina left me grappling with a profound sense of aimlessness, as I pondered the void her loss created a vast emptiness. While Quincy and Dom Boniface busied themselves with the somber preparations for her funeral, I found myself adrift, questioning the purpose of my own journey in a world that now felt starkly devoid of meaning without her presence.

31st March

Mina's lifeless form was tenderly prepared for her final resting place, her body washed with care, her hair styled with precision, and she was adorned in an opulent, custom-tailored burial shroud that enclosed her from neck to toe. Her hands were delicately positioned over her chest, clasping a crucifix.  Surrounding her coffin were elegant arrangements of lilies and tuberoses, their fragrant presence adding a touch of beauty to the somber occasion.

In a private conversation, Dom Boniface confided in me the grave concern that if Mina had succumbed to a vampire's attack, she might be at risk of transforming into an "Un-Dead" entity herself. To avert such a horrifying fate, he proposed the drastic measures of driving a stake through her heart and subsequently decapitating her, a suggestion that filled me with both anger and revulsion, leading me to firmly reject the idea. Recognizing the weight of the situation, Dom Boniface chose not to pursue the topic further.

Mina's body was ultimately placed within a heavy, triple-layered coffin, the innermost layer luxuriously lined with tufted white satin and cushioned with wood wool. Quincy and Dom Boniface took charge of the funeral arrangements, selecting a serene private burial plot in London's Kensal Green. The somber procession featured her body transported in a striking glass-walled hearse, intricately carved and drawn by a team of four to six majestic black Friesian horses, creating a poignant and dignified farewell.

As twilight fell, shrouded in an almost tangible veil of sorrow, we convened to pay our final respects to Mina, a moment steeped in profound grief and loss. My feelings seemed muted, as though encased in an impenetrable haze, which rendered me incapable of engaging in meaningful dialogue with those surrounding me. In a ghostly manner, I accepted the condolences extended by the mourners present at the funeral; their sympathetic words reverberated in the atmosphere yet failed to penetrate the emotional numbness that had encircled my being. The weight of Mina’s departure was staggering, leaving my thoughts in a tumultuous state as I struggled to comprehend the harsh reality of her absence and the significant void it had carved in my existence.

7th April

Following the funeral of Mina, both Quincy and Dom Boniface dedicated several days to providing me with companionship during my time of grief. Quincy extended an invitation for me to visit him in Scotland, suggesting that a change of scenery might aid in my healing process. However, I found myself devoid of the will to continue living in a manner that would allow me to accept such an offer, as I felt an overwhelming sense of purpose that I needed to pursue. I was acutely aware of the emotional toll my presence might impose on others, leading me to respectfully decline his invitation and choose to remain in my residence in London. Once they departed, I was engulfed by a profound sense of solitude, and the absence of Mina weighed heavily on my heart, leaving me to grapple with the deep void her loss had created in my life.

12th April

Last night, I experienced a profoundly unsettling dream that lingered in my mind. It unfolded just after the clock struck midnight, covering me in a scene where a dense, oppressive fog crept through the graveyard, shrouding everything in an eerie obscurity. The surroundings were cloaked in darkness, illuminated only by the flickering light of two handheld lanterns that cast unsettling shadows on the cold, damp ground. Within the confines of a stone vault, the air was thick with the musty scent of damp earth, mingled with the lingering aroma of wilted lilies and an unsettling, metallic hint of blood that seemed to permeate the atmosphere.

The silence was profound, broken solely by the sound of my own heavy, terrified breaths and the crunch of gravel beneath my boots, amplifying the sense of isolation and dread. I found myself standing in the tomb alongside the grim figure of Dom Boniface, my hands trembling as I gripped a heavy wooden stake and a mallet, tools that felt ominous in my grasp. My attire was disheveled, a reflection of the turmoil within, and my face bore the hollow marks of sleepless nights spent in grief, each moment weighing heavily on my spirit.

As we approached the grand marble sarcophagus of Mina, an air of foreboding roofed us. The heavy stone lid, which should have remained sealed in eternal repose, had been ominously pushed aside from within, raising immediate concerns about what lay beyond. Peering into the coffin, we were met with a stark and unsettling sight: the pristine white satin lining was devoid of its intended occupant, save for a crumpled burial shroud that lay abandoned, hinting at a hasty departure. A chill of panic coursed through our veins as the dreadful thought struck us—had we arrived too late? Was she already unleashed upon the world, hunting in the shadows? Just then, a soft, scraping sound reverberated from the darkest recesses of the vault, drawing our attention. Emerging from the gloom was Mina, but the familiar, sweet, and intellectual demeanor we once knew had been utterly obliterated. The transformation was nothing short of demonic; she stood before us clad in a tattered, blood-stained nightdress, her skin now a ghastly, translucent ivory. Her eyes glowed with a seductive yet terrifying "hell-fire" red light, and her once-gentle lips had twisted into a malevolent sneer, revealing elongated, razor-sharp fangs that promised nothing but dread.

Upon recognizing my presence, her demeanor undewent to a facade of mocking, sensual sweetness that is both unsettling and captivating. In a husky, enchanting whisper, she uttered my name "Jonathan... my love... why did you leave me in the dark? Come to me," as she stepped forward, arms outstretched in a deceptive invitation. I found myself utterly bewildered and immobilized by the sight before me; the woman who stood there, exuding an eerie allure, was unmistakably dead, and yet she was not the Mina I once knew.

Dom Boniface, sensing the peril of my entrancement, intervened with urgency, gripping my arm firmly while pressing a silver crucifix into my palm to shatter the hypnotic hold she had over me. In a moment of realization that her psychological manipulation had faltered, Vampire-Mina emitted a grotesque, animalistic hiss, reminiscent of an enraged feline, and with a terrifying, supernatural swiftness, she lunged toward my throat. In a desperate bid to protect me, Dom Boniface hurled holy water at her, the liquid striking her face and causing her demonic flesh to sizzle and burn as if it were acid, eliciting a blood-curdling shriek of agony from her as she recoiled in pain.

Despite her unnatural and thrashing strength, I succeeded in pinning her down against the steps of the altar, a feat that seemed almost insurmountable given her ferocity. She snapped her jaws in a frenzy, her razor-sharp fangs grazing perilously close to my face, while a crimson foam erupted from her mouth, a grotesque testament to her vampiric nature. In a fleeting moment, as the holy water began to weaken the grip of the vampire spirit, the true essence of Mina emerged, her human self momentarily breaking through the darkness that shrouded her. With a voice that trembled with desperation, she whispered a heart-wrenching plea: "Jonathan... kill me... free me!"

Overcome with emotion, tears blurred my vision as I positioned the tip of the sharp wooden stake directly over her heart, the weight of the moment pressing heavily upon me. With a deep breath, I raised the heavy mallet, feeling the gravity of my actions, and with a guttural cry that resonated with both agony and love, I brought the mallet down with all the strength I could muster.

The stake plunged into her chest with a sickening finality, and in response, the vampire entity emitted a blood-curdling, unnatural screech that reverberated through the tomb, shaking loose the dust from the ceiling above. Her body convulsed violently, twisting and quivering as the demonic lifecycle that had held her captive was brutally severed. The air was thick with tension and sorrow, as the struggle between the remnants of her humanity and the monstrous force that had taken hold of her reached its tragic climax. In that moment, the sanctity of the altar bore witness to the profound conflict of love and loss, as I grappled with the reality of what I had done, knowing that I had freed her from an existence of torment, yet at the cost of the woman I had once cherished.

The chaotic thrashing abruptly ceases, and in that moment, the fiery crimson glow that once consumed her eyes dissipates, leaving behind a haunting emptiness. Her menacing fangs retract, and the once twisted, predatory expression melts away, revealing the tranquil, angelic visage of the woman I cherished deeply.

Dom Boniface, with a solemn demeanor, presents me with a heavy, curved Bowie knife, a grim tool for the final act that will ensure her eternal peace. This harrowing task demands that I sever her head and place garlic within her mouth, a ritual steeped in desperation and sorrow. As I kneel in the cold, unforgiving dirt, I gently cradle Mina’s serene, lifeless head in my lap, the weight of my actions pressing heavily upon my heart. Outside the tomb, the first rays of sunlight begin to pierce the horizon, symbolizing hope and renewal, yet I remain utterly shattered—having saved my beloved wife’s soul, I find myself irrevocably lost, my own mind fractured by the burden of this sacrifice.

Upon awakening, I found myself engulfed in a haze of confusion, struggling to discern whether the vivid scenes playing in my mind were a mere figment of my imagination or a reflection of reality. Gradually, clarity began to seep in, and I was reminded of the somber truth: we had laid Mina to rest just a few days prior.

The unsettling thought of her transformation into a vampire haunted me, prompting questions about the nature of my dream. Following her death, Dom Boniface had approached me with a chilling request to perform a ritual that involved driving a stake through her heart and decapitating her, a notion that filled me with dread. I was resolute in my belief that Mina had not succumbed to the darkness of vampirism, and the idea of desecrating her body was abhorrent to me. Perhaps these thoughts were merely manifestations of my own fears and suspicions, swirling in the depths of my mind. In my heart, I fervently prayed for Mina's soul, yearning for her to find peace and a divine connection in the afterlife.

 13th April

After finishing my dinner, I found myself alone in this large mansion. I was thinking of Mina. The absence of her presence weighed heavily on my heart, leaving me engulfed in a profound sense of loneliness. I went to the living room and sat down by the fire.

The living room, with its large window ajar, allowed the ethereal glow of a full moon to spill into the space, casting a silvery light that illuminated the room in an almost otherworldly manner. As the moonlight flooded through the vast opening, I noticed motes of dust suspended in the air, swirling and dancing in the beams of light like tiny spirits caught in a celestial ballet. The dust began to coalesce, forming shapes that seemed to take on a life of their own, and as I watched in horror, three sinister figures emerged from the mist, their forms reminiscent of devilish phantom women.

A wave of terror washed over me, and I felt an instinctual urge to flee; I bolted from the living room, my screams echoing through the empty halls as I locked myself in my bedroom. In a desperate attempt to dispel the fear that clung to me like a shroud, I clutched my Bible and read aloud, the familiar verses providing a semblance of comfort amidst the chaos of my thoughts.

Hours passed as I pored over the sacred text, my voice rising and falling in the stillness of the night, until exhaustion finally claimed me, and I succumbed to sleep. When morning arrived, the gentle sounds of birds chirping outside my window greeted me, and the warm rays of sunlight streaming in offered a sense of relief. Yet, as the day wore on, a lingering dread settled in my chest, for I knew that with the approach of night, the shadows would return, and so too would my fear.

14th April

This evening, while engaged in the routine act of shaving my beard, an unexpected and repugnant odor suddenly permeated the air, evoking a vivid recollection of the first time I encountered the breath of Dracula. The scent was a grotesque amalgamation of decaying flesh and the acrid stench of vomit and blood, which sent a chill down my spine, as if the very essence of horror had materialized in my presence.

Instinctively, I felt an overwhelming sensation that Dracula himself was lurking behind me, prompting me to turn my head and glance over my shoulder. To my dismay, the room was empty, save for the ominous shadows cast by the flickering light of the dying lamp, which only heightened my sense of dread. In the midst of this unsettling moment, my razor inadvertently grazed my cheek, a sharp reminder of the fear that had gripped me during my previous encounter in Dracula's mansion. The memory of that night flooded back, leaving me trembling with terror as I clutched a Bible tightly to my chest, accompanied by a crucifix resting against my heart.

As dawn approached, I took drastic measures to ward off the lingering fear; I meticulously tore pages from the Bible and adhered them to my bedroom walls, transforming them into a makeshift wallpaper of sacred text. Additionally, I surrounded my bed with over ten crucifixes, each one a symbol of protection, and affixed another to my bedroom door, creating a barrier against the darkness that threatened to invade my sanctuary.

15th April

I retired to bed at an unusually early hour, seeking solace in the quiet of the night. As the clock inched closer to midnight, an overwhelming sense of dread covered me. Despite the heavy oak door being securely locked, bolted, and reinforced with a mahogany wardrobe, I was acutely aware that these measures offered little more than a false sense of security. A slender, ghostly beam of moonlight penetrated the darkness through a narrow gap in the velvet curtains, illuminating the room with an eerie glow.

Perched on the edge of my bed, I found myself paralyzed with fear, my knuckles turning white as I clutched a silver crucifix against my chest, the cold metal pressing painfully into my skin. The floorboards outside my bedroom creaked ominously, the sound of slow, deliberate footsteps echoing through the hallway.

My breath caught in my throat, stifling a sob that threatened to escape. For months, I had confined myself within this self-imposed isolation, attempting to convince myself that the haunting shadows of Castle Dracula had been left behind in the mists of Transylvania. Yet, it seemed that the spectres of my past had followed me across the ocean. Suddenly, the footsteps ceased in the living room below, and an oppressive chill descended upon the bedroom, causing the air to grow heavy. I could see my own breath forming wisps of silver vapor in the moonlight, a stark reminder of the fear that gripped me.

The voice emerged with an unsettling presence, not emanating from the walls but seemingly rising from the very floorboards beneath me, scraping against my ears with a sound reminiscent of rusted iron. It resonated with a deep, guttural chant, articulated in a language that predated the very soil of London itself. The rhythm was both commanding and hypnotic, unmistakably echoing the aristocratic drawl of Count Dracula.

In a desperate attempt to escape the horror, I squeezed my eyes shut, yet the darkness behind my eyelids only conjured vivid images of sharp, white canine teeth and blood-red lips. “Listen to them,” the voice seemed to murmur, though it echoed from the depths below, “the children of the night. What music they make.” As if responding to this sinister command, the midnight air outside fractured with a haunting howl. A low, mournful sound pierced through the fog that covered London, followed by another, and then yet another, until a chorus of wolves filled the night with their savage cries, reverberating from the cobblestone streets just beyond my window. The reality of the situation was impossible to comprehend; there were no wolves in London, yet I could feel the presence of these ravenous beasts circling my home, their paws scratching against the brickwork beneath me.

My heart raced violently within my chest, akin to a trapped bird seeking escape, while the air thickened with the pungent scents of damp earth, ancient decay, and the faint, sweet metallic aroma of fresh blood. In the center of my locked bedroom, where the moonlight sliced through the encroaching darkness, the air began to shimmer ominously. The dust motes that had once settled now spun in a chaotic dance, and despite my efforts to shield myself from the terror, I clutched the crucifix tightly to my chest. The Count's devilish whispers echoed from the living room, mingling with the howls of the wolves, creating a tormenting symphony that would haunt me until the first light of dawn.

16th April

As the first light of dawn emerged, a profound sense of relief enveloped me, yet the overwhelming fatigue clung to my eyelids, urging me to surrender to slumber until the afternoon sun had fully risen.

By evening, I found myself seeking comfort in a glass of brandy, a familiar ritual that steeled me for yet another night filled with anxiety and dread. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the encroaching darkness intensified my unease, and soon, the sky unleashed a torrential downpour that shrouded the house in a heavy gloom, with the only source of light being the flickering flame of a solitary lantern in my locked chamber.

As midnight drew near, the atmosphere thickened with the foreboding promise of a storm, and without warning, a fierce rain began to batter the roof, accompanied by a violent gust of wind that snuffed out the lantern's fragile glow putting the entire room in an oppressive and impenetrable darkness that felt almost suffocating. My breath caught in my throat as I became acutely aware of the only sounds that filled the void: the frantic, irregular thumping of my own heart, which seemed to echo in the silence, and the relentless patter of rain hammering against the windows outside. In that moment, I was rendered blind and utterly vulnerable, lost in a realm of shadows.

Suddenly, a thunderous crack of lightning split the sky, illuminating the room for a fleeting instant with a blinding brilliance that felt like a jolt to my very core. In that brief moment of clarity, I caught sight of him—standing alarmingly close, mere inches from my face, his presence looming over me like a dark omen. The flash revealed every grotesque detail of his visage: skin the pallid hue of a decaying corpse stretched taut over a cruel, aristocratic skull, and eyes that glowed with a feral, otherworldly red intensity, locking onto mine with a predatory gaze. However, it was the sight of his mouth that shattered the remnants of my composure; his lips were drawn back in a sinister, mocking snarl, exposing a set of sharp, glistening teeth, from which dark, viscous blood oozed. As the blinding light faded, plunging the room back into an all-consuming darkness, the acrid stench of death lingered in the air, and then, from the depths of the shadows, a chilling, damp whisper caressed my ear: "Did you truly believe you could outrun the master, Jonathan?"

The intense and paralyzing fear that shrouded me became so overwhelming that I lost consciousness, succumbing to the weight of my anxiety. When I finally regained my senses and opened my eyes, I was greeted by the soft light of morning filtering through the curtains, casting a warm glow in the room. This sight brought an immense sense of relief.

The weight of Dracula's curse hangs heavily upon me, casting an enduring shadow that I dread will follow me for the entirety of my life. As an aspiring lawyer, I journeyed to Transylvania brimming with hope and ambition, only to be met with a grim reality that was both shocking and profoundly inhumane. The ordeal I faced was so traumatic that I often find myself longing for a fate similar to that of Renfield, whose tragic demise appeared to offer a release from the relentless anguish I now endure. Even in my survival, I remain acutely conscious of the inescapable presence of Dracula's curse, which relentlessly stalks me. In a desperate bid to escape this malevolent force, I took a leap from the edge of his castle, yearning for freedom. However, I survived not through the benevolence of fate, but by choosing to plunge into the river below instead of succumbing to the finality of the stones. This decision, while sparing my life, has left me wrestling with the painful truth that my suffering persists, serving as a constant reminder of the darkness from which I cannot seem to break free.
