There’s an old English saying that “two’s company and three’s a crowd.” But for some party people, three is just right when it comes to sex. The definition of a threesome according to Webster’s Dictionary is “a group or three persons or things” or “a golf match in which one person plays his or her ball against the ball of two others playing each stroke alternately.” It’s fair to say that Mr. Webster probably does not have an active sex life.
The R-rated definition of a threesome is when three people have sex with each other. Duh. According to Dr. Katherine Frank, author of Plays Well in Groups: A Journey Through the World of Group Sex, a threesome “refers to group sex between three people of any combination of sex or gender. All three may be single, or the situation may involve a couple inviting another man or woman into their bedroom. While the idea of a heterosexual couple looking for a so-called 'unicorn' — a single woman willing to join the couple — some couples extend an invitation to single men.” The point is a couple can invite someone of any gender to play with. Threesomes, unlike golf, are non-exclusionary.
