Your name will adorn Nalanda history in letters of gold

Abraham Lincoln once said: “In the end its not the years in your life that counts, its the life in your years.”

This quote is absolutely true for the life of Sugunadasa Athukorala who was the Principal of Nalanda Vidyalaya, Colombo from 1969 to 1982.

During his tenure of 13 years, he shed his light of wisdom on hundreds of students who passed through the portals of Nalanda.

He was simple, soft spoken, gentle and kind. He was a gentleman with a large and warm heart. He had the noble quality of highlighting what is good in others, and he never spoke of any thing negative or uncomplimentary of others. He had a vision and was far sighted. He believed that if one wanted to get anything done from the public sector you should always have a cordial and friendly relationship with the officer in charge of the subject and not with the bureaucracy.

The beautiful buildings that depict the pride of Nalanda are a result of this belief. Athukorala was a people's person.

He was quick to identify and pick talented and gifted students in academics or in sports or any other field, and he guided them and encouraged them to reach high goals in life. Further, he always told us to help and uplift the children who came from less affluent homes. The personal attention he gave these students is unbelievable.

He trusted the teachers, and once he gave a responsibility to any teacher, he never interfered and most of us who held responsible positions never broke that trust. But it is sad that a few interpreted his goodness as a weakness and abused his goodness, but being so noble he never spoke bad of them.

During his period in office, he looked after the minor staff and using his good office, was able to make those who had temporary appointments, permanent and pensionable.

Athukorala was a gentleman par excellence. His life was rich in experience, and he shared the wisdom he gained over the years with the society. His life was one of dedication and commitment to enrich and uplift the image of Nalanda as a leading boys school of Mother Lanka

      “Rupan jirathi, Naman najirathi”.

Sir, we spoke of you yesterday, we speak of you today and we will speak of you tomorrow. Your name will adorn the history of Nalanda in letters of gold.
